Board of Trustees
Franklin Classical School is governed by a Board of Trustees consisting of four appointed (permanent) board seats and three elected seats. This body of seven men and women are entrusted with overseeing the school’s mission and vision, for establishing policy, and for the appointment and oversight of the Headmaster and Academic Dean. The Board, subscribing to the great historic creeds and confessions of the church, governs with an encompassing emphasis on scriptural integrity and direction in all aspects of the school.
There are five persons appointed to fill the four permanent seats with the extra person taking a one-year sabbatical leave from the board. This “sabbatical seat” shall rotate through the appointed members. The three elected board trustees will each have three-year terms and one seat will be filled by election every year. New candidates for trustee may be nominated for service by two or more sitting board members or by petition of no less than fifteen members of the association. The officers of the Board are chairman, a vice-chairman, and a secretary, each of whom are elected by the Board of Trustees. The committees of the board are comprised of an executive committee, standing committees, and any ad hoc committees as deemed necessary.
Executive Offices
As a manifestation of the covenantal, as opposed to a hierarchial, worldview expressed in the Vision and Core Distinctives of Franklin Classical School, a triumvirate of Executive Offices, consisting of the Founder’s Chair, Headmaster, and Academic Dean, work in cooperation with one another. The Founder’s Chair provides philosophical, spiritual, and consultative insight to the Board as well as to the Headmaster and Academic Dean while the Headmaster and the Academic Dean serve to carry out the daily operations of the school. This leadership team is responsible for making all parts come together in an acceptable whole, and therefore will do whatever is needed in accordance with Biblical and Covenantal principles to fulfill the duties and responsibilities appropriate to their individual spheres. Sphere sovereignty is an idea first formulated by Abraham Kuyper who based the idea on the Christian view of existence coram Deo, every part of human life exists equally and directly “before the face of God.”
This concept applied to school government means that each sphere (Founder’s Chair, Headmaster, and Academic Dean) has its own distinct responsibility and authority. The principle of sphere sovereignty seeks to affirm and respect the sovereignty (unique responsibilities and authority) of each individual sphere while stressing the importance of the covenantal relationship in communicating and managing the daily operations of the school.
FCS Association
The Association membership includes the founders, patrons, and parents of all duly-enrolled full-time students of Franklin Classical School, members in good standing of any duly authorized ad hoc committee, school faculty and staff, alumni, and any other such members as may be approved by the Board of Trustees. Each family with students currently enrolled is considered a single vote for the election of new Trustees and any matters or petitions coming before the association.
